Summary of Unit Care

The Neonatal Unit at Blackpool currently cares for around 500 infants per year which comprises of both premature babies and newborns who have a variety of neonatal medical problems including short term Intensive Care, High Dependency Care, and Special Care. There are also 6 Transitional Care rooms on the unit which enable well babies who require some neonatal support, for example those on antibiotics, to remain with their mothers.

Parking & Public Transport Information

Blackpool Victoria Hospital is easily accessible by public transport with bus routes from all areas of the Fylde Coast.
There is a large multi-storey carpark near to the unit.

Visiting Times

Open access for parents and siblings. Other visitors are welcome between 13:00 – 14:00 & 18:00-19:00 every day. Visitors are restricted to a maximum of two plus parents per family.

Parent Facilities

There is a waiting room, parents’ kitchen and a family room on the unit. There are also en-suite rooms which parents can use when preparing for home.

Parent support

There is a Blue Skies Charity Fund which has a dedicated Neonatal Fund and this money is often used to fund equipment and other initiatives to enhance care on the unit.

Sibling Areas

There is a small play area in the waiting room and a family room on the unit which the whole family can use once baby is almost ready for home.


All parents have access to the parent kitchen where free tea & coffee is readily available. There is also a water filter on the unit. Nearby there is a canteen, small food hall & a coffee shop.

Support Resources

A member of the Perinatal Mental Health Team, along with other specialist midwives, visit the unit on a regular basis. The breast feeding support team visit daily.

Support for Going Home

All babies born less than 34 weeks gestation are referred to the Neonatal Outreach Team where support continues in the home. Special referrals can also be made if babies do not fit the criteria but if it is felt a visit would be beneficial. A discharge checklist, including basic life support training, feeding support, a bath demonstration, medication demonstration and information of providing a safe environment is completed with all parents prior to discharge.
