Summary of Unit Care
The Unit is on the first floor of the Charlesworth Building next to the Post-natal Ward. You must enter by the main doorway at the front of the building (next to the Ante-natal Clinic). The door is kept locked at all times for security reasons however; an intercom system is in operation. Please press the buzzer and tell the security personnel, on duty, that you wish to visit your baby on the Unit. After entering the hallway, turn right and you will see the entrance to the Unit (NICU). Press the buzzer by the door and identify yourself to the answering member of staff, who will proceed to let you in. Climb the stairs, the Unit is directly facing you at the top of the stairs.
Please note: do NOT keep the door open for any other persons not with you and DON’T enter without identifying yourself via the intercom.

Two double bedrooms are available on the Unit for you to stay in. These are usually used by Parents whose baby is very ill or for Parents who are due to take their baby home and are getting ready for discharge.

Breast Feeding Support: We support mothers in breast feeding their babies. We will explain how you can express your milk and how to store it until your baby is well and strong enough to put him/ her to the breast. We have electronic breast pumps on the Unit, which we loan free of charge for mothers to use at home. A separate room is available or screens are used at the cot-side to facilitate breast feeding and the use of breast pumps. Skin to skin care is encouraged to help with your milk supply. Please discuss this with your baby’s Nurse.
We have, on site, a hospital restaurant, WRVS snack bar, shop and Costa coffee.
Support for Going Home
Most babies that have spent more than seven days on the neonatal unit will receive support from the neonatal community outreach team. If you live outside of the catchment area your health visitor will be your main support once you are home. Health visitors are fully informed of your baby’s progress during the baby’s stay on the neonatal unit so they will be familiar with your baby’s history.
You will be given written information about the Neonatal unit, the neonatal network which we are part of and additional information provided by BLISS which covers different aspects of having a baby who is born early or who is poorly.
We aim to deliver Family Centred Care with your baby at the heart of what we do. If you have any questions or concerns then please let us know
